- In a media luncheon hosted by the Ocean Lodge on St. Simons Island, the United Way of Coastal Georgia announced its community goal of $1,550,000 for the 2008 LIVE UNITED Campaign. At the luncheon, Chairman of the Board Charlie Rinkevich and Director of Marketing and Fund Development Kay Oplinger discussed campaign goals and introduced Missy Lane as Campaign Chair.
Lane said, “The campaign for 2008 is about advancing the common good for all in our community . . . creating a better life for all of us. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We all win when a child succeeds at school, when families are financially stable and when people have good health. These results have benefits that ripple out to the community as a whole.”
The United Way of Coastal Georgia is focused on the building blocks that promote a better life: Education - Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential; Income - Promoting Financial Stability and Independence; and Health - Improving People’s Lives. Sylvia Geisler, CEO and President, states that their goal is to create lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems. She said, “We don’t just address the symptons of a problem, but we go deeper to the underlying causes.” This year, the Community Investment Committee approve 18 agencies for funding, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Southest Georgia, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, FERST Foundation, Special Olympics, YWCA childcare program, STAR Foundation, America’ Second Harvest, CMAP, Alzheimer’s of Glynn/Brunswick, among others.
This year’s theme: “Living United” means being a part of the change. Kay Oplinger explained, “It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future for all. Together, we can accomplish more than any single group can on its own.
